ACE Numbers & Field Notes

These are the androsaces collected by the AGS Chinese Expedition (ACE) in October 1994. With the exception of A. tapete (recovered from herbarium material!) all were collected as seed.

(Section Pseudoprimula)
Gang-ho-ba, Lijiang. 3,450m. In crevices on limestone cliffs. Perennial herb to 3cm in fruit with small palmately divided leaves. Collected 20/10/94

Yulong Shan above Xi Song (Snow Pine Village). 3,710m. In cliff crevices. Perennial herb to 15cm+ Collected 22/10/94
Androsace axillaris ACE1060

Western Hills Forest Park, Yunnan. 2,400m. Among limestone rocks. Perennial herb with runners. Collected 20/9/94
Androsace bisulca var. aurata ACE1750
(Section Chamaejasme; Subsection villosae; Series euvillosae) 
Wengsui to Xang-Chen, Sichuan. 3,805m. In dry degraded pine forest and in open depressions in hard red earth, but always on sloping banks in open situations. Cushion forming herb with green to greyish-green tight rosettes. In seed 1-4 capsules per stem. Soil slightly acid side of neutral. Collected 5/10/94

Zhongdian to Napa Hai. 3,325m. Monocarpic or perennial herb to 30cm. with basal rosettes of obovate leaves, apices pointed. Collected 16/10/94

East flank of Beima Shan. 4,300m. Open moorland on eroded banks. Cushion forming perennial, cushions grey-green to 30cm across. Seed capsules sometimes solitary, sometimes in twos. Collected 24/9/94

Dequn, Beima Shan. 4,485m. Open exposed slopes among Rhododendrons. Mat forming with rosettes of grey-green foliage to 30cm across. Flowers solitary on peduncles 2mm high. Seed capsules reddish. Collected 28/9/94

East of Summit Pass on Big Snow Mountain. 4,200m - 4,600m. Among Rhododendrons in moorland. Clump forming herb with congested pale green rosettes, close to ground level. Capsules 1 or 2 per stem. Collected 6/10/94

Cangshan Mountains above Dali. 3,600m - 4,085m. Among Rhododendrons in moorland and in more open areas. Tufted, rosetted herb to 3cm+. Collected 25/10/94

Top of pass on Beima Shan before descending to Dequn. 4,650m. In rocky limestone areas, at base of cliffs and in scree. Cushion forming herb with grey rosettes. Inflorescences with up to four flowers. Collected 29/9/94

Big Snow Mountain. West of summit pass. 4,530m. Rocky limestone screes. Mound forming herb to 2cm with congested neat small rosettes. Collected 4/10/94

Tang Dun, N of Zhongdian. 3120m. Relatively dry, calcareous gravel in degraded Pinus/Quercus forest.
Androsace aff. delavayi KGB 223 (RBGE grow this as A. yargongensis)
Da Xue Shan. 4400m. Stable, moist calcareous scree, type 1 (dry ground).
